Car Buying Tips
Buying a car is exciting! Before you start car-hunting, take time to make sure you’re prepared. And remember, SC Telco is here to help you with all your car financing needs.
• What Kind of Car Do You Need?
First, take a moment to think about what you use your car for. How many people do you transport? How long is your commute? Is good gas mileage important? Do you want automatic or manual transmission? If you examine your needs rather than your wants, you’ll quickly find the right car for you!
Rather than purchasing a car because of its eye-catching style or its popularity, let your needs, not wants drive your decision. That way, you won’t exceed your budget and have to go car shopping again!
• How Much Car Can You Afford?
Whether you decide to buy or lease your next vehicle, establishing a realistic monthly payment that fits your budget is essential. But how much should this be?
A good rule is that your total monthly car payments should not exceed 20% of your monthly take home pay.
To help you estimate how much car you can afford, go to the SC Telco FCU tab, click on the Home Page channel bar, then go to the Calculators module. From there, you’ll be able to find a calculator to fit your needs.
Leasing a vehicle often times requires little or no money up front and offers lower monthly payments. But when the lease is up you are left without a car and a need to find a new one.
On the other hand, you could purchase a vehicle. Buying a car may be more expensive initially and have higher monthly payment, but at the end of the loan you’ll own the car. That way you’ll still have a car to drive or sell if you choose!
• Drive a better car for less money
• Drive a new car every few years
• No trade-in hassles at the end of the lease
• When interest rates are low, it’s better to own than to lease
• You can sell the car when you want
• Consider the Cost of Ownership
When searching for the perfect car, most people over look the fact that one car might be cheaper to buy, but more expensive to own. Why? Even if two cars sale for the same price, one may depreciate at a faster rate or cost significantly more to insure and maintain.
Before you commit to a particular car, estimate the cost of long-term ownership. This includes, fuel cost, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.
So, you have a good idea which car will fit your needs. Or maybe there’s a couple that fit the criteria you’re looking for. Now it’s time to narrow it down!
Car buyers are accustomed to visiting local car dealerships to find what they want. Now, it’s quicker and easier than ever. • Test Drive, The Right Way
The goal of a test drive is to experience the same type of driving conditions the car will be used for after you buy it. If you drive in mountains, be sure to find a steep incline to test drive the car. If you commute, be sure to drive the car in both stop-and-go traffic and on the highway. Drive over bumps, around tight corners, and also test the brakes in a safe place. Get in and out of the car and be sure to sit in the backseat, if you plan on carrying passengers.
While you are test driving the car, try not to drive with the radio on. Just be sure to test it once you arrive back at the lot. And don’t be destracted by the salesperson’s pitch. Purchasing a new car is a big investment. It’s important to spend enough time really looking at it.
It’s generally a good idea to do all of your test driving in one day. When you drive cars back to back, it will help you discover even minor differences between the different cars you’ve chosen.
You’ve looked at all the cars that interest you and you have a good idea what type of car you can afford. You’ve test driven your top choices and decided whether you want to buy or lease. Now it’s time to narrow your choices down to one car and make a deal!
An auto loan from SC Telco is the way to go because it’s a money-saving deal! And, whether your car is new or used, we have rates to suit your individual needs. Let us pre-approve you before you shop, so you’ll know just how much you want to spend.
